Description:
COVID-19 precautions have increased online orders, and with that, personal packaging waste. Paper waste makes up the largest percentage of municipal solid waste, and consumers have no outlet to choose differently.

We set out to help consumers value packaging waste by designing against dead ends.

Checkmate is a mycelium chess set designed to change how we think about packaging. The set functions as protective packaging, then becomes chess pieces after the wine is removed from the package.

Like fine wine, this packaging is designed to be enjoyed and to age well.

After enjoying the bottle of wine and game of chess you can save the packaging as an exciting conversation starter for future games. If you are uninterested in saving the chess set you can always recycle the cardboard board and compost the mycelium pieces.
